Niagara Falls

The Niagara Falls was formed during the Ice Age and is the second largest falls on earth, second only to the Victoria Falls in South Africa. It consists of three waterfalls: American Falls, which is between Prospect Point and Luna Island, Bridal Veil Falls, which is between Luna Island and Goat Island, and Canadian “Horseshoe” Falls, which is between Goat Island and Table Rock. The Niagara River that forms from Lake Erie and Lake Ontario flows through the Great Basin and falls in three formations.

The Niagara Falls is a major source of hydro-electric power for both the United States and Canada. The United States have two reservoirs that generate a combined 2.7 million Kilowatts of power and Canada generates 2.4 million Kilowatts of power. These power plants generate one quarter of all power used in New York State and Ontario.

For generations, the majestic beauty and humbling power of Niagara Falls has fostered a sense of awe and wonder. When you are on the American side of the falls, you are on the top of them and are looking down at Niagara Falls. You can go to the Cave of the Winds. This exciting tour clothes you in a hooded raincoat, or poncho, and takes you into a cave and along a catwalk near the waist of the falls. It is here that you get a wet and very rewarding sight of the thunderous, cascading waters. When you cross over to the Canadian side, you are looking straight at the falls, unlike the American side. On this side, the Maid of the Mist takes you so close to the falls that you are almost directly under them, while a guide lectures on the history of the falls. You can also walk along the Niagara River and experience the roaring rapids beside you. The New York State and Canadian government have converted these waterfalls into the Niagara Falls State Park and developed many attractions along the falls and river. On the whole, a trip to the Niagara Falls cannot be anything but rewarding and an unforgettable, lifetime experience.
