Have you ever watched or played the game of (American) football? People who don’t know much about this sport will probably think that it is really rough and the objective of the game is to tackle and score field goals. Well, part of this is true. Football is a rough sport and it will cause injuries and the objective is to score field goals.



Football Rules

Most football field varies in size. The NFL field measures 120 yards by 53 yards and 1 foot. At both ends there are goal lines. These mark off the end zones. These measure 10 yds. To score the opposing team must get the ball into the end zone. Lines cover the field corresponding to the end zone. These go at 5-yard intervals. In additionally, every 1.9 yards, there are hash marks. After a play, the officials put the ball to the nearest hash mark. The play begins there. In each end zone there is a goal post. If a player kicks a ball through the goal post, it counts as extra points.

Officials

Seven officials look over the game. They are a referee, an umpire, a linesman, a field judge, a line judge, a side judge, and a back judge. The referee is mainly the head of the officials and decides the calls. The umpire questions uniforms and equipment. The linesmen mostly mark the balls at the end of each play. The field judge mainly times the game.

Football play

The team who has the ball is on offense. The other team is on defense. The offense tries to advance the football on plays. The defense has to try not to let the offense from scoring.

The offense could lose the football when:

- scoring

-Not getting 10 yards in four downs.

-Fumbling or dropping the football and the defensive team gets it.

-Throwing the football to a defensive player for an interception

-Punting, or kicking, the football to the defensive team.

-Missing a field goal.

-Getting tackled in the end zone for a safety.
